Japanese Walnut Burl Incense Burner (with copper ash tray) — One-of-a-kind

This incense burner is crafted using only burl wood from domestically grown Japanese walnut ( Juglans ailanthifolia ). The amount of burls harvested from Japanese walnut is small, and finding material that meets the required size, health, and dryness for crafting is extremely rare. In particular, it is very difficult to find raw wood that allows the "beauty of the knots" to be the main feature, making the process from securing the material to processing extremely challenging . This piece is truly a once-in-a-lifetime creation that meets all these conditions.

The deep, dark brown color unique to Japanese walnut burl is a natural color created by nature over many years. Depending on the light, it changes its appearance from blackish brown to a warm, rich brown, as if reflecting the weight of time embodied in the annual rings of an ancient tree. The characteristic burl grain and grape grain are densely present, and the black streaks flowing in places connect the landscape as a suminagashi (marbling) pattern . This time, we meticulously determined which side of the raw wood would be used for the rim, down to the millimeter, so that the center line and knots of this suminagashi would be in the most prominent position. We repeated the process of rough cutting → resting → final cutting to **"fix"** the intended landscape onto the surface. This adjustment, which is not visible from the outside, requires many years of experience and meticulous intuition.

The interior incorporates a handcrafted copper ash tray made by skilled Japanese metal spinning craftsmen . This precisely handcrafted ash tray boasts excellent heat retention and durability, significantly enhancing its functionality as an incense burner. It accommodates a wide range of incense types, including powdered incense, pressed incense, kneaded incense, small pieces of fragrant wood, and even cone-shaped incense, by simply placing ash or fragrant sand inside. After use, the ash tray can be easily removed for disposal, and the design prevents heat and fragrance from transferring to the wood.

The finishing touch is an oil and wax that allows the wood grain to breathe. Fine polishing brings out the luster, resulting in a smooth, pleasant feel to the touch. Small pinholes and dark grain (natural filling marks) inherent to burl wood are intentionally preserved as proof of its natural origin , becoming part of its aesthetic appeal.

This incense burner is a true work of art in woodcraft, making the most of the unique grain and knots of the wood. It's a truly special piece, suitable for both appreciation and practical use.
