The burls that appear on zelkova trees are a type of tissue abnormality that occurs during the tree's growth process. They are unique areas that are created when the cambium layer beneath the bark becomes intensely active locally. The cambium layer becomes disordered due to factors such as branch attachment, trauma, or stimuli from bacteria and fungi. The normally orderly annual rings and grain become intricately intertwined, resulting in the dense and intricate grain characteristic of burls. In these areas, the wood fibers twist as they grow, creating fine swirling or granular grain patterns not seen in normal wood. The cross-section is characterized by a unique granular structure and numerous small burl-like traces.

Zelkova burls form slowly over many years, but they only occur on a very limited portion of the tree. Furthermore, even when they have grown into burls, not many retain healthy wood throughout, and decay and hollowing are common. For this reason, zelkova burls in a condition suitable for use as timber are extremely rare and are considered a rarity in the precious wood market. Even large-diameter burls are often unusable depending on their internal condition, and only a very limited number possess both healthy grain and beautiful figure.

A major characteristic of zelkova burl is its wood grain structure, which is completely different from that of regular zelkova wood. In regular zelkova wood, the grain is mainly linear, running along the annual rings, but in the burl, the fiber direction is intricately intertwined, resulting in a continuous pattern of fine swirls and granular grain. Therefore, when the surface is polished, the fine grain emerges within a soft luster, creating a deep and nuanced appearance that subtly changes depending on the angle of light. In addition, the dense intertwining of the fibers tends to make the wood very dense, and it is also characterized by its unique weight and smooth texture.

Furthermore, zelkova burl often exhibits various sizes of knot scars and granular tissue, which, when combined, create patterns resembling scattered stars or ripples on the surface of water. These natural formations cannot be artificially replicated and appear only in very limited areas of a single tree, meaning no two pieces have the same appearance.

Thus, zelkova burl is extremely rare in terms of its formation process, the probability of it remaining as timber, and the unique grain patterns it exhibits, and has been highly valued as a precious wood since ancient times. The complex grain and dense texture created by nature over a long period of time possess a unique charm that can truly be described as the trajectory of the tree's life.
